Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in September and given more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.
This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his move to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
He was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
