The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
