Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
